The trip was a success!  Some of our vacations in the past have been so bogged down with angst from our one and only bored teenager but this one was different.  It could have something to do with the fact that he brought a friend along.

We visited the St. Louis Zoo, shopped at the Galleria, went to Six Flags, caught a Cardinals game (vs. the Colorado Rockies), trammed to the top of the Arch and finished up with a gawking of the Union Station and a last little bit of shopping.  All in 4 days. I am probably the only person who'll admit to knitting at Six Flags.  My body & head is not made to go on fast, swirly, jerky & wet rides so I just walked around by myself while the guys indulged in the craziness.  I saw a couple of the shows and took the tame train ride.  And in between, I found a rather secluded, covered bench and dug out my knitting.  There was a breeze that helped keep the sweat out of my eyes.  The knitting was just a simple dishcloth (again) but there was no way I would have had the concentration to focus on my sock.

I was also able to knit while we traveled down the road--more dishclothes.  Over the whole trip, I completed 2 and started a 3rd. The drive was about 7 hours each way.

DH messed his back up so the last 2 days were pretty tough for him.  He toughed it out and did his best to walk from far away parking spots to our destinations.  He even squinched up to get into the tiny tram cars (see photo below) that took us to the top of the Arch and back down.

We were lucky.  There was a tram that came to the top and the doors got stuck.  I don't know how long they stayed that way but my heart thumped and beads of sweat formed on my forehead in sympathetic panic.  Its definitely a challenge for those with claustrophobic tendencies not to mention those with height issues!
