Argosy Wrap

Free Pattern: Argosy Wrap Yarn: Noro Kureyon (8 skeins) Needles: US #8 (5 mm) 24" or longer circular

This is another deviation from the original Argosy scarf that was in the Knitty Winter 2006 issue. The interior part of the wrap is basic stockinette which helps this project go faster. The edges are 3 "squares" deep. I used Kureyon that I had on hand and since I had 3 different colorways, I used them in a somewhat random way so that the darker ones were between the lighter ones.

I haven't had anyone work up a test run on my instructions yet so if anyone comes across any discrepancies in the pattern, please let me know so I can fix them up.

My cat is giving the wrap a raving review - if kneading it, sleeping on it and purring on it counts at all. She has an unnatural knack for finding woolly things.

Next up: A triangular shawl version. I'm using the new KnitPicks yarn CotLin in Key Lime. It's looking nice so far.

I have done your argosy scarves and now I am doing the argosy wrap. It is gorgeous in the noro but I had lots of luna park self striping beautiful sock yarn and so I cast on with size 7 needles and it is looking wonderful.
One Question and then One Comment....
Do you think the fingering weight yarn on size 7 needles will work up to be lots smaller than yours or maybe be alright? I do love how it is working up.

I had so many ufo's on the needles I promised myself I wouldn't start anything new but when I saw this my fingers were itching & the yarn fell into my lap.

Thanks for the corrections! I made the changes to the instructions and have updated the link to the pattern. I emailed you with my "guesses" on whether the fingering weight yarn will work. Keep me posted!

I just hopped on over from Mason-Dixon and I am sure glad I did. This is amazing, it is debatable that anything using kureyon is amazing, but really this is amazing. The pattern works so well and the drape, that drape is even better than the colors! Well done, I have downloaded me pattern. Thank you, thank you, creative genius.

Could you tell me how much yarn you think the Argosy baby blanket will take? Or, at least, how big a baby blanket should be?

I'm a devoted Argonaut and a pregnant friend really wants a hand-knitted baby blanket made from custom hand-dyed washable yarn. Picking a pattern was easy, since I was just looking for an excuse to knit something new in Argosy. I've found a hand-dyer and I need to tell her how much yarn I want. I can wait on the pattern, since the baby's not due until August.

My mom wanted an argosy scarf, so I promptly purchased some silk garden lite for her. I came back to your site yesterday and I am now completely smitten with the argosy wrap. My question is- How does your noro kureyon argosy wrap feel? Is it real scratchy? Not that it matters since I already bought the yarn for It :) I will suffer for the sake of beauty, but I just want to know what to expect.

Hi Erika,

About the feel of the Kureyon, I have to say it is not the softest wool yarn out there. But I never wear wool right next to my skin so it's never been a concern to me. Those colorways cancel out any hesitation when it comes to whether I should use it or not.

I am wondering if one used the lace pattern for the entire wrap instead of doing the center in stockinette would you need more yarn? Need I say it's a great pattern. Thanks.

I'm not sure but my guess is that it shouldn't take much more yarn, if any. But to be on the safe side I'd suggest getting at least one extra skein of yarn. The part that causes me to think it might take more yarn would be that the YO's may use up more yarn than a stockinette stitch would. I have nothing scientific to back this up though.

Help! I've sent you a couple of e-mails as I'm stuck, yes, stuck on row 9.
Once I've casted on the 8 stitches that are on the left needle, now what?? Do I knit them or??
