Eyelet Version (KnitPicks Panache)
Pattern: Brubeck Mitts
The construction of each mitt starts with one pentagon which is divided evenly on 5 (yes, 5!) double pointed needles. Every other round decreases 10 stitches. It may be a little fiddly starting out for the first time but soon it’ll feel like knitting a pair of socks. The second pentagon is connected to the first by picking up stitches along 2 of the sides and then worked the same as the first pentagon. The cuff stitches are then picked up and worked on 3 dpns in the round, again, just like a sock. Once the stitches are bound off, there is only minimal finishing required. After a good blocking, they’re ready to wear. And if so desired, the pieces can be knit separately and then sewn together.
After making the first set, I kept grabbing yarn I had on hand and trying other variations. I’ve come up with 2 styles, one with eyelets for a more feminine look and another worked in garter stitch. And after that, I tried working them with a slightly smaller gauge yarn and one size smaller needle. When deciding which version to make for yourself, choose first which size will fit best (there’s only about one inch difference in circumference between the 2 sizes at their widest part) then choose which style to make.
If you’d like an even smaller size, try a thinner yarn and smaller needles. The cuff ribbing can be made as long as you’d like or can even be omitted altogether.
As I knitted up these hand warmers, I kept thinking of the number 5 and a classic jazz tune came to mind called “Take Five” by the Dave Brubeck Quartet. I thought it appropriate, what with a 5-sided shape covering my 5 digits being worked on 5 dpns (not counting the needle working the stitches).
